Strong Provides Air Force with Waste-to-Energy Solution

The US Air Force identified the need for removal of their supply of out-of-spec Aqueous Fire Fighting Foam (AFFF). Before replacing this supply with a new formula, a non-landfill alternative disposal method for the existing stock was required. This request specified disposal through one of two methods: (1) incineration or (2) waste water treatment. Although either method was considered advantageous over landfill, both presented challenges to be taken into account in order to develop a satisfactory disposition process for the material.

When used, AFFF is mixed with water and expands into a fire suppressant foam. This characteristic prevented the material from being disposed of via waste water treatment. Strong investigated several alternative disposal methods; however, the chemical composition of AFFF presented other challenges. Upon review of the various methods available, Strong was able to present to the Air Force a third alternative, not considered by any competitor: a waste-to-energy solution based upon conversion of the liquid into a solid, then using the solid to create energy.

In keeping with the US Government's "green" mandates, the US Air Force chose Strong's unique solution to a challenging disposal problem.
