StrongPak Expansion Continues

StrongPak, a division of Strong Environmental Inc., continues to expand its unique brand of service to major retailers by launching service in California, Nevada and Hawaii this September. “As retailers become more aware of federal and state compliance issues concerning the proper disposal of hazardous waste from their stores, demand for our service grows,” said Strong President Richard Verch.

Recent government concerns of one large retailers’ practice of sending potentially hazardous unsaleable products back to their distribution center came under investigation by the Department of Transportation. The issue at hand was whether spilled or damaged products that were deemed hazardous waste could be transported from a store to a distribution center in trucks that were not properly designated as hazardous waste haulers. Although the results of this investigation have not yet been made public, many large retailers are becoming proactive and implementing programs that ensure regulatory compliance.

“Many people don’t realize that a bottle of hand sanitizer, which is flammable, cannot be put in the dumpster if it becomes damaged,” commented StrongPak Operations Manager, Gary Waldron. Other common products found in many retail stores may be hazardous, including many household cleaners, some personal care products, and almost all pesticides.

Because the quantity of hazardous waste generated at a single store is small, many retailers may think they are exempt from EPA regulations. “Retailers are generally considered Conditionally Exempt Small Quantity Generators (CESQG), but they are only exempt from some of the reporting requirements. All businesses, large or small, must comply with the proper disposal of hazardous waste,” said Strong’s General Manager, Tom Carney.

Carney continued, “Before StrongPak, the cost of disposal was so high that some retailers looked for creative ways to handle the small amount of hazardous waste generated at the store level. Now that StrongPak is available, compliance is much more affordable.”
